โ€œMan snoring loudly, a common symptom of sleep apneaโ€
Loud snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea.

๐ŸŒ™ Sleep Apnea?

A sleep-related breathing disorder that interrupts airflow during sleep.
  • Types:
    • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) โ€“ throat muscles relax, blocking the airway.
    • Central sleep apnea (CSA) โ€“ brain fails to signal breathing muscles.
    • Complex sleep apnea โ€“ combination of OSA and CSA.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Symptoms

  • Loud snoring
  • Breathing pauses noticed by a partner
  • Gasping or choking during sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Daytime sleepiness and irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating

โš ๏ธ Causes & Risk Factors

  • OSA causes: Relaxed throat muscles, obesity, enlarged tonsils, narrowed airway.
  • CSA causes: Heart failure, stroke, opioid use, neurological issues.
  • Risk factors:
    • Excess weight
    • Older age
    • Male sex
    • Smoking and alcohol
    • Family history

๐Ÿฉบ Diagnosis

  • Polysomnography (sleep study) โ€“ overnight lab test.
  • Home sleep test โ€“ simplified version for OSA detection.

๐Ÿ’Š Treatment Options

  • CPAP therapy โ€“ continuous positive airway pressure keeps airway open.
  • Oral appliances โ€“ reposition jaw/tongue.
  • Lifestyle changes โ€“ weight loss, avoiding alcohol, better sleep hygiene.
  • Surgery โ€“ nasal or throat procedures for airway obstruction.
  • Medication โ€“ limited role, mainly for CSA.
